BRADY GANDY: FROM A CHILDHOOD DREAM TO THE GRAND OLE OPRY

Brady Gandy’s journey began in the small West Texas community of Bledsoe, near the New Mexico state line. His family enjoyed everything from Frank Sinatra and Mozart to Jimmy Buffett, but Brady discovered something special at age 12 while watching The Beverly Hillbillies at his grandmother’s house. The banjo and bluegrass music captured his imagination.

That same summer, Brady picked up a banjo at Texas Music Supply in Levelland and began learning under the guidance of musician John Hartin. Brady kept practicing because every new musical challenge made him want to work harder and learn the next part.

While attending high school in Whiteface, Texas, Brady spent his summers at Camp Bluegrass at South Plains College. By age 15, he was playing in a college ensemble and discovering traditional country, jazz and the great musical sounds of the 1960s.

Brady later learned to play bass and performed across Texas with musician Bobby Flores. During that time, he heard some of the finest steel-guitar players working in country music. The sound of the instrument stayed with him, and he eventually began learning steel guitar himself.

Brady borrowed a steel guitar from a friend while he practiced, worked as an insurance claims adjuster and saved enough money to purchase an instrument of his own. He continued working his regular job while playing local performances and developing his unmistakable steel-guitar sound.

As a boy practicing the banjo, Brady once told his father that he thought it would be wonderful to play the Grand Ole Opry someday. Years later, country and bluegrass legend Marty Stuart discovered a video of Brady playing steel guitar on Facebook. Marty tracked him down and personally called him with an invitation to perform.

Brady initially thought the telephone call might be a prank. It was real.

In August 2026, Brady Gandy stepped onto the Grand Ole Opry stage and performed steel guitar alongside Marty Stuart—fulfilling the childhood dream he had shared with his father many years earlier. The dream began with a banjo and came full circle through the beautiful sound of a steel guitar.

Marty Stuart has also invited Brady to perform with him at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium in late October.
